*The Reilly Report

As you know, we are following a trimester academic schedule this year. October 15 was the halfway point of the first trimester and on Monday every student will receive a mid term report. Students in grades 1-3 will have one report from their teacher and students in grades 4-8 will have a report from each academic class. Please review the recorded progress and sign and return the report(s) by Wednesday.  We will be scheduling parent conferences in two weeks and hold the conferences on November 12,19,25, and 26.

Plan ahead for Halloween and All Saints day. Our annual parade will be at 2 P.M. either in the parking lot or through the halls of school depending on weather and construction. Mass times for the Holy Day are 4:30 PM on the 31st, and on November 1st at 6:30 A.M., 9:15 A.M. (K-4 will attend) 2 P.M. (grades 5-8), and at 7:30 P.M. For the parade many grades are wearing specific types of costumes, such as patron saint or hats only. In general, we encourage creative costumes that promote healthy imagination and fun. Since we will be walking around, students will not be permitted to wear masks. Of course, I also ask that no weapons of any sort, including plastic look-a-likes, be brought to school. Costumes should be carried to school in a bag or backpack. Homeroom parents will be here to help with the celebration, but it is still best if students are able to put on their costumes without assistance.

Our seventh and eight graders participated in the Pregnancy Center West’s In Control Program. The program is designed to teach students the value of choosing chaste lifestyles. By demonstrating the value of self-respect and self-control, students are given the tools necessary to remain chaste out of love for God, themselves, their families, and their future spouse or vocation.

Peterman Bus Service notified us that bus assignments and routes are being modified. Be sure you check the information they mailed to you. Let your child know the changes. We do not have the information in our office!

St. X and Ursula will be visiting 8th grade students on Monday, October 21st. McAuley and LaSalle will be here on Monday, October 28th.

SHOW YOUR RESPECT!

By Miss McLaughlin, Mrs. Crowley, and Mrs. McNeil

The entire student body will be studying the character trait of RESPECT for the month of October. Some ways in which we all can show respect at home, school, and in the community are: by using manners, courteous language, showing people that they are important by the way you treat them, listening carefully, thinking about the feelings of others before you do or say anything, being able to disagree with someone without anger or violence, returning what you borrowed in good condition, behaving appropriately in class, respecting the earth/environment (example: picking up trash). If you happen to be in the school building during the month of October, check out the hall display on “RESPECT”. Thank you in advance for your help and support on this project.

The money collected from our October 25th Spirit Day will be going to C.U.P. (Catholic United for the Poor). Our Daily Bread is a beneficiary of this organization. We will also be collecting items for the Mary Magdalene House on a voluntary basis throughout the month of October. Items needed are: tooth brushes, small tubes of tooth paste, Vaseline, baby powder, deodorant, bar soap (hotel soap is fine). Please send them to school with your child.

THE FLIGHT OF THE ZEPHYR

Submitted by Michael S, 5th grade

            July 3, 2002

Today is the day when I begin my long anticipated sailing trip. The sky is blue and cloudless, and I can see the sun glimmering off the water. Sea gulls fly over my head, going to the ocean to feed. As I step into my boat, the Zephyr, an old man with a gray beard in a red and yellow checkered shirt and fishing boots yells, “Be careful out there! I heard rumors of things like...” he stopped speaking. I was already sailing out into the ocean. Then, I heard a faint voice yelling, “Be careful! Be careful!” and that was it. All of a sudden, I felt the boat rattle a little, then it started shaking and shaking and....whoosh! The boat tilted forward and flew into the air like a speeding bullet! I was hanging on for my life until I looked down. Pop! Out jumps a small gray dolphin with its beautiful blue eyes. Will anyone believe that I was flying in a sailboat? How will I get home?

            July 5, 2002

I’m running out of food. I only had enough for 2 days! Wait...I hear rattling coming from my boxes of food. I look inside and magically, I have enough food! As the day turns to evening, I watch the sunset. In the sky, there are pools of clouds with stripes of yellow, orange, and red. In the distance, I see big, ominous storm clouds that are speeding toward my boat. I feel a fierce wind blowing, and I hear thunder rolling like a speeding train coming closer and closer to the station. FLASH! FLASH! RIP! The lightning rips my sails and burns them as I fall back to the ocean. Splash! Water splashes into my boat and instantly puts out the fire. Waves start to crash in all directions. As I helplessly float about, I spot a small island about one hundred yards away. All of a sudden, a huge black wave sends my boat flying toward the island and...

            July 6, 2002

I wake up to find myself on the shore with my boat tipped on its side behind me. I must have hit the shoreline so hard it sent me flying onto the beach. A man with brown hair and a beard approaches me. “I see yer need a new set of sails,” the man says. His voice is low and hoarse, as though he has a bad cold. “I’ll get’em if you’d like?” “Sure,” I say, “that would be great!” It took  about 2 hours before we got the sails and put my boat in the water with the sails. “The hull’s a little scratched up, but it won’t do any harm. Oh, by the way, those sails are magical. You will be able to fly, but not over land! If yer do, you’ll.....hey! Wait!” The timbers of the boat start to skake as I jolted up into the air again. “Thanks for the help!” I yell as I’m flying away. The man gave me a blue and gold banner that says “World’s Greatest Sailor!” on it. Now, I have to prove that I’m the greatest sailor!

            July 13, 2002

It’s been over a week since I’ve seen my family or the town. I still have enough food for me but not as much as before, of course. It’s been hard for the last few nights because I couldn’t get to sleep. It’s getting darker as I fly. As I look at the sky, I see the silver moon looking down at me, smiling from above. I see the golden stars shining in the sky, lighting the way for travelers at night (like myself). What’s that in the distance? It looks like the old lighthouse at the end of the sea. As I fly closer, I see the church of St. Ignatius where I attend. Now’s my chance to show that I’m the greatest sailor! I have to plan this right.. If I fly over the spire at the right time, the huge bell will ring twelve o’clock (which wakes up a lot of people) and when the people look out, they will see me fly in a sailboat and I’ll be in history! Bong! Here I go! Bong! As I try to fly over the land, the timbers of the boat start to shake.. I can’t  control the boat! I’m going to crash into those trees! As I hit the tree, I fall out of the boat and onto the moist ground. CRACK! OOOOWWWW! A terrible pain shoots up my leg as I yell for help. I can’t move it at all. A man hears my cries and rushes over to me. “It’s broken, son,” he says. “Let’s get you to a hospital.” He picks me up, puts me in his car, and drives me to a hospital. As I’m lying in the bed, I start thinking about the whole thing, should I tell anyone, or should I keep it a secret? Who knows? Oh, here comes the doctor.

And to this day, nobody know the true tale of the “Flight of the Zephyr”, except me, of course!
