THE WILDCAT WIRE

Volume 7 Issue 18                  St. Ignatius School       January 17, 2003

The Reilly Report

The Bible Bowl has been rescheduled for next Thursday, January 23 at 4:00 PM. Good Luck to our 2003 Team: Jillian B., Elizabeth E., Brian K., Michael M., Ann W., and Casey B. I would also like to use this space to express my appreciation to the coach, Mrs. McNeill and her assistants, Mrs. Keith and Mrs. Engel, the event coordinator, Miss McLaughlin, and to Fr. Bolte, the question author. We also appreciate the many teachers who help make this event possible.

The PTO Blood Drive will be in the school cafeteria on Thursday not in Hilvert Center.

The optional sixth grade camp information meeting will be held in Hilvert Center at 7:00 P.M. The meeting will be on Thursday the 23rd as scheduled.

Appreciation Dinner All adult volunteers are invited to the annual appreciation dinner on Saturday, January 25. The event will be held in the new Fr. Hilvert Center beginning after the 4:30 Mass. Please RSVP to the parish office 661-6565.

Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated nation wide the last week of January. The entire community is invited to attend our school open house on Sunday, January 26 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. You are also welcome to join us for our all school mass on that Tuesday, January 28 at 9:15. We are still taking nominations for the Outstanding Alumni Award. Please forward the names of anyone you know who is a St. Ignatius School Alumni and has demonstrated the values basic to Catholic schools. Irish Winterfest submitted by Mr. Reilly

Friends of Irish Dance will host an Irish Winterfest featuring the McGing Irish Dancers at St. Ignatius on Friday, January 24, 7:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Winterfest will be held in the Fr. Hilvert Center. Here is your chance for some family fun of a different flavor. Come and watch Irish Step Dancing (learn and dance some too if you are so inclined), listen to Irish music, join in raffles, have some snacks! Adults are $5, Children 12 and under are $2. Limited tickets are available at the school office.

Martin Luther King Jr Day No school on Monday, January 20.

Snow policy reminder: You may want to review our closing and delay policy in the handbook. The bottom line is that since the majority of our students live in the Northwest School District, ALL of our students need to watch for Northwest delays or closing. It is a problem if Cincinnati or Oak Hills is delayed and Northwest is not, as happened today. School is officially open and in session on time in this case and students living in Cincinnati and or Oak Hills need to either get a ride to school or realize their bus will arrive well after school has started. We understand the difficulty and realize that you will do what you can do. Fortunately, this situation is extremely rare. It has been seven years or so since it happened.

SPELLING BEE HELD IN NEW CENTER

Submitted by Mrs. O’Reilly

On Tuesday, January 14, Emily D. (grade 6) and Lexie B. (grade 4) won their respective rounds of the St. I’s Spelling Bee, which was held in the new Fr. Hilvert Center. Emily had to spell "cinematography" and "stupendous" to claim victory, and Lexie won her round on "ascension" and "chapeau". (They had to do it without the benefit of a computer spell checker, too!) Emily will be our representative at the Cincinnati Post Spelldown on February 27th at Union Terminal, and Lexie will be our alternate. We wish them both the best of luck! The champions for each grade level are:

Grade 3 - Jenna T.                            Grade 4 - Lexie B.

Grade 5 - Robbie R.                         Grade 6 - Emily D.

Grade 7 - Noah H.                           Grade 8 - Abbie J.

*NURSE’S NOTES

Several cases of head lice have been reported this past week. The key to the control of head lice is prompt identification and treatment of the infested individuals. It is imperative that our school be notified immediately if there is an outbreak of head lice in your family. Although lice infestation causes a great deal of concern among families, understand that infestation is fairly common among school age children and should not be associated with poor sanitation. Nor is it necessarily transmitted to school.

The most common symptom is persistent itching, often with scratches or rash on the scalp. In checking for lice, particular attention should be paid to the scalp, the back of the neck, and behind the ears. Head lice are grayish parasites that lay their eggs (nits) at the scalp, attached to the hair shaft.

Head lice can be transmitted in various ways: borrowing a comb, brush, hat, ribbon or scarf from an infected person, sharing their towels or pillowcases, or lying on infested carpets, beds or upholstered furniture. Head lice do not fly.

Treatment involves washing the hair with a special shampoo, removing the nits, and washing or cleaning certain household items (to prevent reinfestation).

Remember, head lice can happen to anyone. The most important control measure is communication. Please inform the school if infestation occurs in your family. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 389-3242 ext. 4.                        Thank you, Katie Seifert, R.N.

CHARACTER BUILDING

by Mrs. Grote, Mrs. Hudepohl, & Mrs. Ray

The character building trait for January is ambition. Ambition is a strong desire to succeed at something. It requires great ability or effort. Like the Magi, we are all searchers, explorers, and travelers following the "STAR". We search for God in our lives and follow the direction that God shows us. Let us follow the "STAR" and be a light of Jesus. Please help your children set goals this new year spiritually, academically, in relationships, and in discovering and developing their talents. Help them shoot for the stars and be ambitious!

*FROM THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION:

Happy New Year form the Athletic Association! Basketball season is in full swing and we’re busily planning our upcoming spring sports season. A hearty thank you to all the many folks that donate their time and energy to support our programs and ultimately the well-rounded development of our children. Thanks also for your patience with our facilities during our construction phase. Upcoming events to plan for: Field Clean-up Day on March 1st, baseball try-outs on March 8th, and Men’s Stag Night, and Cornhole Tourney on April 7th.

FOUND: There was a tennis bracelet found at the Fall Family Festival. Contact Greg Otis to claim this or report any other item lost at sporting events.

Lastly, we regret to report that during our Boys’ Basketball Tournament this past Saturday evening several vehicles parked along Boomer Road were hit with eggs. while this behavior is intolerable, to make matters worse, many of the vehicles hit were of our guests from St. Antoninus. This, along with the rough condition of our facilities during construction, does not reflect well on our community. Our facilities will be repaired; our reputation is another matter for each family to be aware of. We have sent a letter of apology to the St. Antoninus community. If you have any information regarding this or any vandalism at St. Ignatius, please contact Greg Otis at or the parish office.

Thank you to everyone who purchased PACE certificates and placed SCRIP orders during the busy holiday season. The entire parish benefits from our support of this program. The supply of special certificates (Bath & Body, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Old Navy, Speedway, Texas Roadhouse, and Toys R Us) that we carried in stock for holiday shopping has been depleted. However, these certificates can still be ordered through the SCRIP Program. The SCRIP Program is available throughout the year. Orders can be placed after the weekend Masses and picked up the following weekend. Order forms are available at the PACE/SCRIP table in the back of church. Please continue to purchase certificates and KEEP UP THE PACE at St. Ignatius!
