October 4 - Feast of St. Francis - the Blessing of
Pets This great saint is the patron saint of animals, as tradition
says that St. Francis would not even step on a bug. The Blessing of
Pets will be:
October 7 for PSR Students
October 4 at 6:00pm for parishioners
October 4 at the 2:00pm All-School Mass for St. I students
If you cannot bring your pet, bring a picture for the blessing.
On Mission Sunday, October 21, 1996, St. Ignatius
formally began a partnership with the Third World Parish of San Jose
La Communidad in Mixco, Guatemala. During 1997 we added a second San
Jose parish to our Covenant Relationship.
Over the past years, we have been blessed with an exchange
of letters, prayers and visits. On Mission Sunday, October 21 we will
pray for our friends in San Jose Parish, Guatemala, St. Leo's, Fairmount,
and McCreary County, KY. Those wishing to become more involved should

Tim Crooker, Monica Dirr, Rebecca Baston, Emily Lang, Jenny Looby, Stepfanie,
Carrie Wurzelbacher, Sarah Gellenbeck, Michelle Imbus, and Cindy Newhaus.
Dear Fr. St. George,
My name is Monica Dirr. I am a senior at McAuley High School and an
alumnus of St. Ignatius. Several months ago, Deacon Tim Crooker, two
adult women, and five other McAuley students were on an immersion trip
to Jamaica. We stayed at a home for boys, which is run by the Sisters
of Mercy. While at the Bosco Home for Boys, we repainted a dormitory
that had previously been damaged by a hurricane. We also visited a home
for the abandoned elderly, which was heartbreaking. It was amazing to
see these people who have absolutely nothing and know that their time
on earth is ending, yet they are so happy and so loving. Later that
day, we went up into the mountains of Jamaica, bringing food, clothing,
and smiles to families that don't have much of anything. We saw dilapidated
houses made hundreds of years ago to 12 children in a small, 2-bed house
to a hole in the side of a hill. That particular day was both humbling
and inspiring.
There is a particular story I would like to share with you, and unbelievable
example of love and faith. The house was a stone building, but much
of it had been destroyed by a hurricane. One room still had four walls
and a roof, and in this room lived Cecil Welcott. Cecil was old and
blind. As we brought him his small bag of food, he smiled, which lit
up the small, dark room. He took each of our hands in his and introduced
himself. With his introduction, to every single person, he said, "You
and I are now brothers and sisters. We are no longer strangers."
Before we left, we stood hand-in-hand in a circle and prayed. Cecil
volunteered a prayer for us, which was, "As God led your footsteps
here, may He guide them on the rest of your journey and hopefully one
day He will guide you back to my door". I don't think there was
a single dry eye in the room. I don't think any words or stories could
really give this trip justice. I learned about Jamaica, people everywhere,
God, my family, and myself, more than I expected I would. And none of
it could have been possible without your donation! Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
Monica Dirr

VOCATION ARTICLE
Whenever I'm asked to give a talk on my journey to the priesthood,
I usually try to preface it by telling my audience up front that my
vocation story isn't all that interesting. There are no stories of me
being knocked off my horse by peals of lightening and hearing the voice
of God, nor are there any anecdotes of my being told by mysterious passers-by
that I should enter the seminary. No, in place of such extraordinary
events in which saints have come to realize their vocations, my discernment
story is simply that of an ordinary guy being called through ordinary
means.
Growing up as the 3rd of 4 in a loving, Catholic family, I always had
an appreciation for the important part that the Faith played in my life.
I can remember going to Mass as a kid and just being in heaven. I loved
everything about the Mass; the music, the people, the standing, sitting
and kneeling, the priest's vestments, everything. In fact, I loved going
to Mass so much that I would even go to "Mass" at home - "celebrating
Mass" in my bedroom, with a green bath towel slung around my shoulders
serving as my vestment and a packet of Necco Wafers as my hosts.
This love for the Mass and attraction to the priesthood was further
deepened in grade school by the good example of my pastor. He was a
priest who enjoyed being a priest, and he did a lot with us grade school
children, from having sing-along with all the classrooms every other
week to playing croquet with us on the rectory lawn at recess. By way
of his example, I grew up with a strong sense of the priest being spiritual
father - an image that I found very appealing.
In addition to the good example provided me by my childhood pastor was
the good upbringing I received from my family. There was much love in
my home. My parents did all they could to let us kids know that we were
their cherished possessions. From transporting me and my siblings to
our early morning soccer games to the sacrifices they made to insure
that we all received a Catholic education, my parents taught me what
it means to both love and be loved. My siblings, as well, have helped
to form me to be the man I am today: my older sister and brother both
showing extreme patience when dealing with me, their "tag-along"
brother; my little sister, who probably has been my closest companion
on this journey towards the priesthood, teaching me what it truly means
to live life with the childlike innocence and joy that Christ speaks
of in the Gospels.
These experiences have been the prime shapers of my vocation thus far.
Certainly, if you would ask another seminarian or religious to share
his or her discernment story, you would probably hear some similarities
but many differences, for God calls each of us in a very unique and
personal way.
I encourage all of you to take the time to discern how your "vocation
story" would read. What have been the key experiences in your lives
that have brought you to a knowledge of what God is calling you to do?
If you already know how your vocation story would read and are presently
living out that vocation, perhaps you could aid someone to know his
or hers. God knew us before we were formed in the womb, He has a plan
for each of us. Let us pray for each other, that we may all follow God's
plan in our lives.

Parish Health Ministry: What are Advanced Directives? Advanced
Directives are a set of written legal documents, which must be signed
when the individual for whom they are written is competent to make decisions
regarding medical care, and which state that individual's wishes for
future medical care (a Living Will) and who they would like to carry
out those wishes and make other medical decisions on their behalf if
unable to do so (a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care). When
considering creating such documents, a logical first step is to discuss
them, your current medical status, and possible future options for your
care, with considered.
Advanced Directives have become particularly important in recent years,
given the increase in Alzheimer 's disease and other forms of dementia.
Current data shows one in eight Americans over the age of 65 have Alzheimer
's disease specifically and the number is even higher when all forms
of dementia are considered.
What is Dementia? Dementia itself is not a disease but rather a group
of symptoms which may accompany diseases or physical conditions. Dementia
results in the "loss of intellectual functions," i.e., thinking,
remembering, reasoning and is severe enough to interfere with an individual's
daily functioning. Depending on the cause of the dementia, the rate
of progression will vary and it may or may not be reversible. Some causes
of dementia include Alzheimer 's disease (the most common), multi-infarct
or vascular dementia, Huntington's disease, Pick's Disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob
Disease (a rare form - caused by a transmissible infectious organism
and usually rapidly progressing), and Lewy Body Disease. Depression,
brain tumors, nutritional deficiencies, head injuries, hydrocephalus,
infections, drug reactions, and thyroid problems can also cause dementia.

PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES
August 7th, 2007
Attendees: Fr. McCarthy Fr. Wall, F. Posinski, D. Eveleigh, G. Otis,
R. Stansell , R. Ratterman, J. Grote, A. Zirkelbach, Sr. Lucy, A. Daniels,
F. Tepe, M. Schirmer, L. Sieve, P. Zirkelbach and T. Barford.
The meeting opened with a prayer led by Frank Tepe asking for continued
guidance for Pastoral Council. A discussion of Faith followed led by
Anna Zirkelbach. Her comments reflected that the subject was new to
her but enlightening. Fr. Don commented that the subject of "Natural
Family Planning" was not new to him since he had served on the
Board of the Couple to Couple League for over twenty years and that
the organization was active with programs in several countries outside
the United States.
The minutes of the June 27th meeting were submitted for approval by
G Otis and seconded by F Tepe. The minutes were approved by a unanimous
vote.
The staff report from Sr. Lucy discussed that the Nursing Home Visit
program was in the final stages of a review and revamping. She was very
excited about the new program and that it would be reviewed at the September
meeting. The new program would be more effective in meeting the Parish's
needs and use of staffing resources. She also commented about an analysis
of the parish data base had revealed over 100 members who were not baptized,
an additional 100 plus who had no specific Faith association and 600
who were non-catholic. The data would be used to improve our outreach
program with possible increases in our RCIA program over time. The Parish
Web site had finally been reactivated and that newer data would be forth
coming along with a complete redesign of the Site to make it more dynamic,
interesting and accessible. Anna Zirkelbach had volunteered to be the
main designer and reorganizer of the site working closely with the Staff.
Additional Staff comments noted the need for additional workers at some
of the festival Booths, cleanup personnel for the Monday following the
festival. A total of 860 Main awards tickets had been sold which was
a little behind the sales of last year at this time. The Cub Scouts
will be grilling at the Parish Picnic on Friday Sept. 7th at Stricker's
Grove. Bingo continues at a slower pace with total proceeds in the last
fiscal year contributing $74,000 to our capital program. Although this
is @ $30,000 less than previous years, it is still the only Fund raising
activity that can generate this additional revenue so hopefully it can
continue for the next several years. Collection of Tuition for last
year has been a struggle and finally all but $7,500 was collected. The
Mission Collection on Aug. 4th /5th had totaled $8,750.
Commission reports
Laura Sieve, Assistant Principal, attended the meeting as the
new School representative on the Education and Spiritual Growth Commission.
The next meeting was scheduled for September.
Pat Zirkelbach reported that the Worship Commission had
several dates set for workshops and spiritual growth opportunities for
Eucharistic Ministers, Bereavement Ministers and other groups. There
would also be additional surveys this year for ideas and comments but
closer to the program completion date. She noted that the most negative
comments were about the poor sound system in the Church and the use
of the microphones.
Eric Stevens reported that none of the groups had responded to
his request for comments from the Community Activities Commission.
Marlene Schirmer said that the report of the Social Ministry
was redundant and only a repeat of what had previously been reported
in the bulletin and Insight. And that the members usually were not very
responsive. She reviewed some of the details of the Christmas in July
and Angel Food program. She said that she would be resigning her position
after three years of service and she had commitments from parishioners'
to take over this position.
The Social Ministry reported that the dates for the Christmas
in July Food collection or St. Leo's would be the weekend of July 28th.
The Angel Food Ministry is going well with Sat. the 30th of June the
next distribution day. There will be a "Going Away" party
for Fr. Ed on July 1st at St. Leo's.
Finance Commission reported that the first two major projects
were nearing completion, Sealing and Caulking of the Church and the
new roof and that the cost totaling $ 125,000 would be paid from existing
reserves. In addition the contract for the new sewage line and pumping
station was approved by the Archbishop and the project would start within
the next 10 days. This portion of the project amounted to $ 107,000
was awarded to Nieman Plumbing.
New business included a discussion and review of the new policy
of the Archdiocese on the use of facilities and liability coverage.
Copies of the requirements were given to all in attendance. The basic
premise is that to be able to use the facilities, including the fields
as a Parish/ School sponsored group or activity you must meet two basic
tests:
1) The pastor/principal has the authority to start, direct, control,
manage, expand or eliminate the activities of the organization.
2) The pastor/principal has the authority to sign checks on the organization's
checking account and receives the monthly statements.
If these criteria are not met the organization or individual must purchase
Event Coverage for each time the facility is used, or provide a certificate
of insurance of least a $ 1,000,000 naming the Archbishop, The Archdiocese
of Cincinnati and St. Ignatius Loyola as an additional insured.
A recommendation was made from several council members that the attendees
at the JR. High Celebration need to provide a "Permission Slip"
to attend and authorize them to add one additional attendee to the form.
This would control the attendees by limiting them to approved individuals.
There was a brief sharing of comments from the phone calls made to
parishioners by council members. The content was positive with requests
to improve the sound system and to continue to stress the catholic beliefs.
The meeting closed with a prayer by Greg Otis
