“Bridges to Contemplative Living” is a spiritual development program for adults who desire to live everyday life in a more contemplative way. Bridges was designed by the Merton Institute as a resource for individuals as well as members of small faith sharing groups looking for new ways to grow in their relationship with God and each other. This fall, four sessions will be offered at St. Ignatius centering on the program’s first theme, “Entering the School of Your Experience.” Come to one or all of these sessions and discover for yourself what Bridges is all about. Bring the Bridges experience back to your own small faith-sharing group or continue with the next part of this program in the spring. The first session meets Monday, October 8th from 7-8:30pm in the Parish Office. Questions? Call Sr. Lucy (661-6565).

A little while back a few members of our Contemporary Group “Celebrate” (10:15 Sunday Mass), traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to perform on the Worldly Acclaimed program, BACKSTAGE PASS. The show highlights groups from around the world that help spread our Lord’s message through their musical and singing talents. Celebrate was invited by the owners of Heartbeat Records after they had listened to their last CD “What Kind of Love” to showcase their inspirational songs to the world through this half-hour program that Heartbeat Records produces at the EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) studios in Birmingham. For the early riser you can catch the program on EWTN, (Time Warner Cable Channel 23, Direct TV Channel 422) Tuesday October 9 at 5am. and Thursday October 11 at 10pm. Respect Life: May we never cease to pray for the day when all people, and all societies, will defend the life of every human from conception to natural death. New members are needed to join the Respect Life Committee. Our goal is to restore respect for rights of all humans, born and unborn… and to model and encourage an attitude of respect for all human life. Spiritual, informational, and educational activities, along with fundraising events, are organized to meet these goals. Contact Sharon Hoesl for information.

Gift Bearers: Some families with young children have approached the Worship Committee expressing an interest in bringing up the gifts during mass. Any individuals or families interested in volunteering need to arrive early to check in with the ushers for that mass. If a particular mass is being offered up for a loved one and you would like to carry up the gifts, mention this to the ushers before mass. Please remember to dress appropriately

From Our Pastoral Associate

They say that a good picture is worth a thousand words, and this week’s Gospel reminds me of one of my favorite pictures of Jesus. Imagine it for yourself if you like: just close your eyes for a moment and picture him standing by a river, selling river water!

Strange, you say? Not really. In a way, that’s what Jesus is doing in today’s passage from St. Luke. When the apostles ask him for more faith, he basically tells them they already have all the faith they need. What they need is a reminder of just what faith is.

It’s obvious to us that faith doesn’t make the impossible possible; God does. Consider how no individual human being, nation, or even group of nations possesses the kind of power that can stop, with absolute certainty, all the violence in the world, or even assure that every human being has the food, shelter, and clothing they need to live. It’s beyond the ability of humanity— even as a whole—to offer those things to each other in utter confidence we can deliver! But faith does make possible openness in each of us to what God would do for us all, and a greater sensitivity as to how we might cooperate with God in doing that.

We human beings are built to bring the tasks we work at to satisfactory, happy conclusions. We approach these tasks deeply rooted in the logic and ways of the world, just as the mulberry tree is deeply rooted in the soil in which it quite naturally grows. But Jesus would have his followers clear about what faith is, as well as faith’s task: to cooperate in the building of the kingdom with everything they are and have. And more, he would have them know that they already have all they need— including faith—to do that!

Is it possible? Jesus makes a point of telling the apostles that there’s nothing special about all of this; that’s just the way this God-created world is! Apparently, Jesus sees the river of life quite differently than we do. As spiritual master John Shea puts it: “He just saw what was there [in that river] and what was possible, and he struggled mightily with all the art at his command to have other people see what he saw. What he saw were mulberry trees, one after the other, on their way to the sea.”

For one rooted in the logic of the world, to find the kingdom blooming and recognize it as a work in which we can cooperate but which is ultimately not our own can feel a bit like watching a mulberry tree growing in an impossible place. And yet, the impossible truly IS possible—because of the One in whom we place our faith and that One’s love for us.

Blessings! -- Sister Lucy
