A Week in Review with
Fr Pete

I must admit this has been always one of my favorite weeks in the year, the best being Holy Week. I enjoy seeing everyone having fun dressing up and running from classroom to classroom seeking overloaded sugar items. The Halloween parade is a hoot, some of those kids have quite an imagination.

But my favorite part of the week has always been the Holy Day of Obligation, followed by All Souls Day. One of the singular, most Catholic days of the year is All Saints. A chance to come together and give thanks to our all stars of faith, heros of hope and our cornerstones of courage. We, a people of faith, have a great blessing that continues to bless our Church, the saints. People whose shoulders we still stand upon, exemplars of courage in the face of troubled times and in the face of death. People, with ordinary lives that have done some truly extraordinary acts of faith.

Most Saints lived lives that could easily mirror yours, with the same worries and daily struggles. But some where deep inside their faith, they found away not to let the world influence their thoughts or their charity. They truly found ways of living a selfless life and gave freely of the gifts God freely gave them. And if you ever have the chance to read the lives of the Saints (which you do have) you will find out that many had loving people behind them, to support them, teach them and encourage them. St. Monica & St. Augustine, St. Benedict & St. Scholastica, and our own patron St. Ignatius had the monks that helped him recover from is battle wounds. And while many had loving people to back them in hope, they all relied on God to call them forward to take up the mantel of sainthood.

As for All Souls day, a day I like to see as the day that we reach out to and pray for those ordinary saints in our lives whose name may not be recorded in a book in Rome. Those saints that had real hands on effects in our lives. Those people that helped to raise us and feed us and share with us their lives. It is also a chance, with our prayers to assist those that are in continued need of our help, even those who no longer walk or sit beside us now. I don’t know where I first heard this quote, “pray for the dead for the dead continue to pray for us” but I believe it!

So take some time, with your self or with those whose life you share and recall the Saint who you may be named after and ask for their intersession and pray for those members of your family now passed on and for our parish and all those we sent home to God this year and years past.
God Bless
Fr. Pete
