It’s “Soup-er Bowl” Sunday again! Each year on Super Bowl Sunday, many churches of all denominations around our nation collect money at the church doors for local agencies serving the poor. Next Sunday St. Ignatius will participate again. Parishioners at St. Ignatius have been very generous in the past. We hope that this trend continues.

Want to get involved with sharing the Faith in new ways? Have you ever or would you consider consecrating your life to the Blessed Mother? The Legion of Mary is a worldwide association of Catholics dedicated to evangelization with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Our mission includes welcoming new parishioners and sharing the Faith with non-Catholics. We welcome people seeking both active or auxiliary memberships. The Legion of Mary has weekly prayer meetings on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm in the Fr. Seaman room and our Spiritual Director is Fr. McCarthy. For more information, call Kara Tencza.

The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is an annual effort by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to spread the Gospel through informing and engaging the faithful with important regional ministries that benefit thousands of people throughout nineteen counties in western and southwestern Ohio. We invite you to share your gifts of time, talent, and treasure to participate in the life of our local church through these ministries. CMA funds six ministries: pastoral education (seminarians, deacons, and lay pastoral ministers), Catholic Social Services, St. Rita School for the Deaf, chaplains for hospitals and prisons, retired Archdiocesan priests, and college campus ministries. The Archdiocese annually spends over $7 million on these ministries. Our goal this year is to fund $4 million for these ministries from the CMA. Visit www.catholicappeal.info.

Angels on Wheels needs volunteers who can take people to church on Sunday, or to local Dr.’s, store, etc. If you are able to help call Teresa Denton or Ann Duffy

Thank you to those taking the Vocation Chalice. To have a Vocation Chalice in your home, call the Parish Office or to help with our Vocation Committee call Dennis Halaby. We encourage all parishioners (young, old, single, married, etc.) to participate in this ministry.

The Worship Commission would appreciate response from our fellow parishioners regarding our services and celebrations during Advent and the Christmas season, which lasts through the Baptism of our Lord. Please share your ideas regarding liturgy (dramatizations), rituals, call to worship with gifts, etc.), décor and environment, music and liturgical movement, special services (reconciliation and adoration) and the “little blue books”. If you have any comments or suggestions on ways to improve our worship, or if you would like to affirm our efforts, please call Pat Zirkelbach. Through your input and the guidance of His Holy Spirit, we strive to serve the St. Ignatius Community with the best possible worship.

SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE: The school is hosting an Open House, today, Sunday, January 27th from 1:00 to 2:30 to kickoff Catholic Schools Week. Take a tour, meet the staff and peruse the student activity booths in the cafeteria. Due to limited space, it is very important that families who want to enroll for the Fall, submit an enrollment form and $50 registration fee before their category deadline. Enrollment forms for the 2008-2009 school year will be available in the School Office at Open House and may be turned into the School Office at any time. Children will be enrolled in the following order of priority. Priority within a category will be determined by the date of parish registration. Children not registered during their appropriate registration period will lose their respective priority.
Registration
Period - Category
1/7 – 1/25 1 - Families/students currently enrolled in school
1/27 – 2/8 2 - Parishioners inside school boundaries
2/11 – 2/22 3 - Parishioners outside school boundaries
Begins 2/25 4 - Private students

Did you know…that each class in St. Ignatius School is paired with one of our senior parishioners, many of whom live alone, are homebound, or reside in a nursing home/retirement center? The children and the seniors pray for each other throughout the year, and at holiday times the children send cards, write letters, or craft a small gift for their senior contact. If you are aware of any parishioner who might enjoy being a part of this program, contact Sister Lucy.

Kiwanis Fish Fry at the Concession Building behind the Church begins Ash Wednesday, February 6 and continues every Friday during Lent. The hours are 4:30-7:00pm. The menu includes fish sandwiches, fish, shrimp, or chicken dinners. Use the convenient drive-up window for takeout orders or eat inside the building.

We have a very rich church in tradition and scripture. Since the Vatican Council the Sunday readings are from the Hebrew Scriptures, the Old Testament, the writings of the followers of Jesus, especially St. Paul and then the life of Jesus in the Gospel stories. All of these readings call us to be holy in our own walk of life. When we miss these readings at Mass, we really miss the story of our salvation. The readings and the Eucharist go together. Even Jesus recalled the Jewish freedom at the Passover meal, we call the Last Supper.

The Bible readings today call us to repent. These were the words of John the Baptist in Advent and Jesus repeats that same admonition in the Gospel reading. So, really, we are called to lead a Holy life. Sometimes the word “holy” scares us a bit; like if we had to live in a monastery or convent. But the word really means to live in the world and do what we should be doing in our own walk of life right now; and every age group from little children, adolescence, young adulthood, marriage, parenthood, middle age and finally to older age - all through that period of life, we are called to be holy. That is doing what we are called to be in that particular time of our life.

At Mass, when we have read the Scriptures, we go back 2000 years to the upper room and do what Jesus told us to do to remember Him. This is what makes our Church so very blessed, to have the fullness of the writings of both the Old and New Testament and the Eucharist. The music may change, the style of the presider is different, but so were the Disciples different from one another.

The Eucharist is the best place for us to forget our divisions, and to see in others the love of Christ. After all, when we come here, we unite ourselves with Jesus and with one another, with all who are here within these walls, with the whole Church, and with the whole human family.

The Parish Nurse from St. Leo’s, Mary Beth Basch, is a member of a group of nurses from the College of Mt. St. Joe that have organized a community project to be implemented early in January of 2008. This project is a supplemental protein drive for the food pantry at St. Leo’s. The pantry supports between 800- 1000 individuals during a month and finds it challenging to offer good, nutritious food to these well deserving residents of Fairmount. The food drive will focus on collecting the following: canned meats of any kind, tuna/chicken, any type of canned or bagged beans (legumes), dry milk, and any type of nut butter such as peanut butter, cashew or almond. In addition, if one would prefer to donate money instead of food, the money will be used to purchase fresh meat that would also be distributed. There will be a box outside the Parish Office till February 3 where you can drop off any of the above.

The Women of St. Ignatius Christ Renews His Parish Team #34 would like to introduce ourselves to the parish community. We invite women of the parish who have yet to experience this wonderful weekend to join us February 23rd and 24th. There is limited availability, so call now if you are interested! You may contact Karen Rahn or Lora Huhn (Invitation Coordinators) for more information or to reserve your spot for the weekend. Space is limited so it is important to secure your spot today. We are eager to pass this experience on to others and look forward to witnessing the many transformations that come as a result of the special time together.
