Ash Wednesday, February 6 marks the beginning of the penitential Season of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and days of fast; that is, limited to one full meal. The other Fridays of the Season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The laws of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years of age and older. The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday. Mass Schedule for Ash Wednesday is:
7:00am               9:15am
2:00pm               7:30pm

On Ash Wednesday a second collection will be taken to aid the church in Central and Eastern Europe. They have repeatedly expressed gratitude for the financial support from their American sisters and brothers. Proceeds go to support seminaries, social service programs, youth ministry, church restoration, and the spread of Gospel.

Ash Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration – There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after 9:15 Mass with rosary and confessions. Adoration will end at 1:00pm due to the 2:00pm mass for this day.

February 6th – Ash Wednesday Soup Supper: It has been a tradition for many years at St. Ignatius that we provide a dinner consisting of vegetable soup, peanut butter/jelly sandwiches, coffee, etc. We ask that those who attend give a contribution equal to a night out at a medium priced restaurant. There is, however, no monetary requirement. Most of the proceeds will be donated to Catholic Relief services. Food will be served in the school cafeteria beginning at 5:30pm. Fr. Ben Urmstron, S.J. will begin his presentation at 6:30pm and conclude by 7:15pm. Afterwards many of those present head over to church for the evening Ash Wednesday Mass which begins at 7:30pm. Please make a special effort to attend this year’s annual Ash Wednesday Soup Supper. You will enjoy good company, learn about Catholic Church Social Teaching, and help those in need.

The “Little Black Books” are coming to St. Ignatius! Make these wonderful meditations part of your spiritual life this Lent. Published by the Diocese of Saginaw, these reflections of the late Bishop Ken Untener have for many years been a treasured part of many Catholics’ preparation for Easter. The books will be at the doors of the Church beginning Ash Wednesday.

Angels on Wheels needs volunteers who can take people to church on Sunday, or to local Dr.’s, store, etc. If you are able to help call Teresa Denton or Ann Duffy

The first financial kick-off for Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is parish commitment week-end (February 16/17). Pledge envelopes will be in the pews on this week-end. All CMA monies fund six ministries to include pastoral education (seminarians, deacons, and lay pastoral ministers), Catholic Social Services, St. Rita School for the Deaf, chaplains for hospitals and prisons, retired archdiocesan priests, and college campus ministries. For the first time, donors will have the opportunity to make electronic payments by credit card and automatic bank drafts from checking and savings accounts. Please be generous and share. A second collection envelope for CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL (CMA), formerly called the Archdiocesan Fund Drive, will be taken at all the Masses the week-end of March 1 & 2.

Healing Service: Come and experience Jesus’ healing power. Healing includes the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and relational aspects of our lives; it is not limited to a physical cure. Here in St. Ignatius church we will have a Healing Service on Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30pm. Personal prayer for healing will be available during the Service. Questions? Call Sister Chris

The Worship Commission would appreciate response from our fellow parishioners regarding our services and celebrations during Advent and the Christmas season, which lasts through the Baptism of our Lord. Please share your ideas regarding liturgy (dramatizations), rituals, call to worship with gifts, etc.), décor and environment, music and liturgical movement, special services (reconciliation and adoration) and the “little blue books”. If you have any comments or suggestions on ways to improve our worship, or if you would like to affirm our efforts, please call Pat Zirkelbach. Through your input and the guidance of His Holy Spirit, we strive to serve the St. Ignatius Community with the best possible worship.

Kiwanis Fish Fry at the Concession Building behind the Church begins Ash Wednesday, February 6 and continues every Friday during Lent. The hours are 4:30-7:00pm. The menu includes fish sandwiches, fish, shrimp, or chicken dinners. Use the convenient drive-up window for takeout orders or eat inside the building.

Thank you to those taking the Vocation Chalice. To have a Vocation Chalice in your home, call the Parish Office or to help with our Vocation Committee call Dennis Halaby. We encourage all parishioners (young, old, single, married, etc.) to participate in this ministry.

Respect Life News: St. Ignatius Respect Life members meet Tuesday, February 19 at 7:00pm in the Parish Office. Topics include: our annual Bake Sale to support moms and babies, and Project 5000 to stock the pantry of Mercy Franciscan at St. John Social Service Center so families won’t go hungry this Spring. Good things are happening, be a part!

As Catholics we believe that prayer is the most powerful response to the evil of abortion. The annual Way Of Love Walk takes place three consecutive Sundays beginning March 2 at Burnet Woods. Participants meet at 2:00, and walk together on behalf of all involved with abortion. This lent experience is worthy of your time, carefully planned, and is especially meaningful. All St. Ignatius parish members are encouraged to attend one or all of the walks.

Several Pregnancy Centers are able to serve their clients due in part to the generosity of our parish members through our fund raisers and annual baby shower. There are also several members of our Church who give generously of their time as volunteers. Please consider joining this elect group of care givers to any of the pregnancy care centers. Old St. Mary Pregnancy Center often requests assistance, and staff and clients eager for your help, whether it is once a week or once a month. Jenny Wendling (661-6764) can answer any of your questions.

There will be a workshop for new Eucharistic Ministers on Tuesday, February 26. Anyone interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister should come to that meeting.

Our sincerest sympathy is extended to the family of Bobby Nicholas, husband of Lynda, father of Jeffrey and Amy. May his family find comfort in knowing he is with God.

Prayer Shawl Ministry has a prayer shawl for anyone experiencing medical or emotional difficulties. A prayer shawl is a knitted or crocheted garment that has been prayed over and is beautifully wrapped with a prayer card attached. If you would like to receive one or become part of the ministry, please contact Lora Huhn.

Lady Golfers Needed: Golden Tee at Tri-County is looking for Lady Golfers for our Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning leagues. If interested, please call Hilda Priessman at Golden Tee

A Few Words
From
Fr. Pete

Well it is Super Bowl Sunday and I am picking the Giants to win. I know this is going against the common opinion but I like being the rebel. And speaking of the Super Bowl we sort of had a super bowl week here at St. I’s. It was Catholic Schools week around the Archdiocese. The kids did a wonderful job with the all school Mass, we had puppet shows, celebrated those in our society that serve others with selflessness and sacrifice.

We had our State of School Address by Mr. Reilly, in which he said things are going great, and I agree. The school’s test scores are the highest ever, the enrollment is up for a 12th year in a row, truly amazing! But I was a little depressed at the low number of parents. Maybe since it is known that the state of the school is off the charts, we might be taking it for granted. It takes continued involvement and cooperation of both parent and teacher and staff to make this school what it is. So when possible please take an active role in the PTO, school and parent meetings and those programs that help us keep tuition low – such as BINGO. With such a larger number of families in our school, you would be surprised at the low number that helps out the parish and the school at this fund raising event. All we ask is 1 weekend every 9 to 10 weeks. Please contact Barb in the Parish Office (661-6565) if you are able to help.

PRS, with the guidance of Kris and her army of helpers and wonderful volunteers continues to provide excellent Catholic formation to kids. With just as much effort and devotion our kids are being prepared to live lives of service to God and neighbor. Our 2nd and 7th graders are readying themselves to receive the sacraments of 1st Eucharist and Confirmation, a truly exciting time and event for them!

Once again thank you, all of you for supporting our education efforts here at St. Ignatius through you generous support of our Sunday Offering and help in the classroom and cafeteria. God Bless and understand that all of us are charged with the education of our children in the ways of faith.
Fr. Pete

Peter St. George will be the “babe chicks” receiving the Cursillo method. Please keep these men in your prayers throughout this week. Questions? Call Joe Grote

The Women of St. Ignatius Christ Renews His Parish Team #34 would like to introduce ourselves to the parish community. We invite women of the parish who have yet to experience this wonderful weekend to join us February 23rd and 24th. We strongly urge you to consider taking this time for yourself to grow deeper in your faith with the added bonus of getting to know other faith-filled women of our parish. There is limited availability, so call now if you are interested! You may contact Karen Rahn or Lora Huhn (Invitation Coordinators) for more information or to reserve your spot for the weekend. Space is limited so it is important to secure your spot today. We are eager to pass this experience on to others and look forward to witnessing the many transformations that come as a result of the special time together.

Divorced, widowed, separated men – past or present So, you ever wish you could talk to someone who really understands because they’ve been through it? Stop by sometime when you are interested in doing either. Call Ron Kathmann for more details

Alumni We challenge You! The students and teachers have collected $1,094.00 on Spirit Wear Friday to support the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Cancer Camp. We would like to challenge you to meet (or beat) our donation. As many of you are aware, a number of our present and former students have benefited from the services of CHMC. Here is a bit of info about the camp. Camp is July 2008 at Camp Joy, near Wilmington, OH for 1 week. The children swim, canoe, do crafts, play ball games, have water balloon fights, roast marshmallows and sleep in tents and cabins! But, these kids also receive their chemotherapy medicines and treatments at camp. The camp has a medicine cabin where the nurses and doctors see the patients in-between activities.

Camp is for patients with cancer, sickle cell anemia, and hemophilia. Children ages 6 years to high school can attend camp. The cost to send a patient to Camp Joy is about $500.00. Some of our families are unable to send their son/daughter to camp without financial support from the Hematology/Oncology Division. The money we raise with the community and local schools provides the opportunity for the patients to experience summer camp while in treatment.

Please make checks payable to CHMC or St. Ignatius School and place in an envelope marked “Cancer Camp”. You can turn them in at the Parish or School Office. Questions? Call Debbie Colina. The deadline is February 17th. Let the challenge begin!

The Great Cincinnati Performing Arts Society is bringing Richard Thompson to Seton High School on Tuesday, February 5 at 8:00pm. The show has been receiving 5-star reviews around the world. Proceeds support Catholic education. Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased on line at www.gcparts.org or at the door. Questions? Call Jenny Bates.

“Xavier Women’s Basketball church Bulletin Game”: Bring your church bulletin to the Xavier Women’s Basketball Game on Sunday, February 17th at Cintas Center and you’ll receive $2.00 off the regular ticket price. Tickets will be only $5 for adults and $3 for youth ages 17 and under. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00pm. Xavier University will also be raising awareness about breast cancer that game. Fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to the game.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) is raffling a trip for two to Ireland, to be given away on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.
