The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat for Catholics 14 years and older. The obligation to do penance is a serious one. People should seek to do more rather than less. Fast and abstinence on the days prescribed should be considered
a minimum response to the Lord’s call to penance and conversion.

Stations of the Cross: During Lent please come to walk with
Jesus on His road to Calvary and Crucifixion on Gabbatha (the place of the skull). Stations are at 2:15pm on Mondays and 7:30pm on Fridays.

Confessions: 7-7:30pm Monday, 10-10:30am Wednesday, 3-4:00pm Saturday.

Tuesday Evening Novena: 6:45-7:30pm

Lenten Penance Service at St. Ignatius is Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00pm.

Operation Rice Bowl: Each year St. Ignatius Parish during Lent supports the work of the Holy Childhood Mission Office and San Jose Parish Medical Clinic through the Rice Bowls. Lenten Calendars and Rice Bowls were given to each child in our grade school. Additional ones are at the church doors. This program gives us the opportunity to share with our world family through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

The first financial kick-off for Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is parish commitment week-end (February 16/17). Pledge envelopes will be in the pews on this week-end. All CMA monies fund six ministries to include pastoral education (seminarians, deacons, and lay pastoral ministers), Catholic Social Services, St. Rita School for the Deaf, chaplains for hospitals and prisons, retired archdiocesan priests, and college campus ministries. For the first time, donors will have the opportunity to make electronic payments by credit card and automatic bank drafts from checking and savings accounts. Please be generous and share. A second collection envelope for CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL (CMA), formerly called the Archdiocesan Fund Drive, will be taken at all the Masses the week-end of March 1 & 2.

High Blood Pressure is a risk factor for heart attack and is the greatest single cause of stroke. Have it checked regularly and seek help if it is high.

A Few Words
From
Fr. Pete

Well what a week! I had the chance with several men from our parish to attend a Cursillo retreat which I hope will lead to a fuller Lent and life of all. Also the kids had a snow day which I am sure played a little havoc with your daily routines and as I sit down to write this article we are in the midst of a 2 hour delay.

I am not sure how many of you take a retreat, I highly recommend them. There are a vast number and type of retreats out there, the classic retreat where just an individual goes seeking a greater relationship with God and/or a means to serve Him with greater fidelity. There are couple retreats and not just for those to be married. There are marriage encounter retreats for already married couples. Couples seek retreats that are based on the individual style but geared toward the spiritual growth of a couple that shares a sacramental bond. There are silent retreats (my favorite type believe it or not!), there are group retreats mostly associated with retreats for young adults. There are retreat houses of all types monasteries, seminaries, and places like the Milford Retreat House run by the Jesuits. You can find retreats in different settings, in the cities, the suburbs, the mountains, by the ocean and lakes.

Our parish alone offers a number of retreats here at home for you; both women and men have an opportunity to partake in our Christ Renews His Parish. We offer retreats for our liturgical ministers. Your children have the opportunity to go to Steubenville and take part in their Confirmation Retreat. I have a goal of starting a tradition of taking our youth to the Pope’s World Youth Day.

In other words there is a retreat out there which is right for you and your family. Done right you don’t even need to leave your home. Once again the purpose of a retreat is to grow close to God, in service to Christ and to open one to the Holy Spirit. Who would not want to do this for themselves and the ones’ they love.

Lent is to be a time of growth; it is a season of 40 days meant to last a lifetime. Look on this time as a retreat for you and yours. Pray as a family, use the materials St. I’s provided (the little black books), take the Fridays of Lent without meat seriously, and set time aside for more prayer and service for your Church and others.

Today in the pews you will find an opportunity to participate in our Archdiocese’s Catholic Ministries Appeal. I once again ask you to please give generously to this appeal. All funds goes directly to and only to Catholic Social Services, St. Rita’s, Campus Ministries, Chaplains for Hospitals and Prisons, the education of Priest and lay ministers and our Retired Priest.
Fr. Pete

Tips for Preventing the Spread of Colds, Flu etc.

  1. Wash your hands frequently. Consider carrying anti bacterial hand gel.
  2. Use disposable tissues rather than handkerchiefs.
  3. Cough into your arm rather than your hand.
  4. Drink plenty of fluids, 6-8 glasses daily – especially those with Vitamin C
  5. Avoid being around those who have a cold or flu if possible.
  6. At the Sign of Peace it is acceptable not to shake hands if you have a cold. A friendly smile, greeting can convey The Sign of Peace.

Sr. Lucy, Fr. St. George, Fr. Wall, Fr. McCarthy and parishioners seek to visit hospitals or nursing homes. When admitted, be sure to register as a parishioner from St. Ignatius Church and as a Catholic so hospital volunteers can bring Communion. Since hospitals fail to notify the church, call the Parish Office if entering a hospital. Anyone anticipating surgery or experiencing a serious illness should receive the Sacrament of the Anointing. Call Fr. St. George to set up a time for this Sacrament of Healing.
