Already it is the First Sunday of Advent. The word means “coming”. Advent is not as penitential as the Lenten Season is. But it is a serious time of preparing for the Feast of Christmas with prayer and a deeper meaning of what the Feast of Christmas really says to us.

God must have looked down on us and said in His mind: “My creation needs help”. I have sent the prophets and leaders of my chosen people: but the people haven’t listened very well. Perhaps if I sent My Son, they will be attentive to Him. I’ll send Him in a human way from a very special virgin, that is without sin herself, then the people may pay attention and see how much I love and care for each one. So the people were looking forward to the Messiah, but when Jesus came and began His public ministry, some believed and others did not. God has blessed us with Faith to follow the Lord, and that does mean hardships at times along with the joys of life, especially in seeing our children grow us, and the Faith of our families and friends.

So make Advent a happy time and not a hectic time of worrying if everything will be ready when Christmas comes. Perhaps a few hints may help:

  • That we resolve to attend weekend Mass for Advent and throughout the coming New Year.
  • Try and select a gift the recipient will really need. If it’s too expensive, so go together with family and share the cost.
  • It might be time to ask family if we really need to exchange gifts with adults (children always can use gifts). Maybe just get together for dinner on Christmas Day and enjoy family. One could add to set amount of the gift you would have spent and give the same amount to local charities.
  • One family I knew in Springfield was told that each child would receive one special gift, but the family would shop for a needy family in the city and give them a special Christmas. All of this set up by local St. Vincent de Paul Society. The next year the children asked their parents if they could do the same thing again this year. It was the real meaning of Christmas for them, and they did it again.

Make Advent a happy time. Remember what we are celebrating: God Coming among Us.

A Warm Recommendation…Since 1990 I have been a complimentary member of the Western Tennis and Fitness Club at 5940 Muddy Creek Rd.. Most Wednesday afternoons I enjoy a doubles tennis game on one of the nine airconditioned indoor courts and I sometimes visit the large, wellequipped Fitness Center. In appreciation of that long-term membership gift I wish to offer this warm recommendation.
