Catholic Teaching on caring for Gods Creation: the world that God created has been entrusted to us. Our use of it must be directed by Gods plan for creation, not simply for our own benefit. Our stewardship of the Earth is a form of participation in Gods act of creating and sustaining the world. In our use of creation, we must be guided by a concern for generations to come. We show our respect for the Creator by our care for creation. USCCB Administrative Committee, Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility, p. 15. Scarf It Up Club: Those less fortunate need your kindness. Please drop off at the Parish Office your hats, gloves, scarves, mittens, and yarn. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Jesus, Nazi Germany built what was considered the worlds largest battleship, the Bismarck. Its massive armor plating led to the boast that it was unsinkable. It sank many tons of allied shipping early in World War II. But, the Bismarck was sunk because a single torpedo crippled its rudder. Once that happened the great ship was helpless to escape the attacks of the British Navy. It was doomed because it had no rudder to direct it. I would like to use this real world event to suggest that the Catholic Church, sometimes called the ship of Peter because he was a fisherman, would have sunk into oblivion hundreds of years ago if it had no captain who could control the rudder and the direction of the ships course. Today is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday because the Gospel tells of Jesus, the shepherd of His Church. A few verses after todays gospel ends, Jesus says unequivocally, I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know Me. If we reflect on the shepherd role Jesus took, the most basic implication is simply this: Jesus wanted His role of shepherd to survive in His Church. In Chapter 21 of Johns gospel, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him more than the others. As Peter affirms his love three times, Jesus gives him these commissions: feed my lambs, tend my sheep, feed my sheep. The Good Shepherd is delegating His role to Peter. Peter thus became the chief shepherd in the Church once the Holy Spirit came on the apostles at Pentecost But Jesus did extend leadership to the other apostles as in Matthew 28 where He tells them. Make disciples of all nations teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. (28:19-20) St. Paul asks a rhetorical question about leadership of the Romans, How can people preach unless they are sent? (10:15) The shepherding role in our Catholic Church is preserved by the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Men are ordained bishops by the authority of the Pope, our chief shepherd. Bishops ordain priests to share in their shepherding role. The groups of Christians who left the Church in the 16th century and the new popular non-denominational churches do not have the continuity of spiritual authority that is passed down through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Jesus blessed His apostles and their successors with the sacramental powers of consecrating the Eucharist and giving an assurance of Gods forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance. We priests gather with Gods people in the spiritual communities of our parishes. Fr. Peter and Fr. John and I are grateful to share in the shepherding role of Jesus here at St. Ignatius! God bless you all, Fr. Each team member then plays a second shot from the spot where the selected drive lay and the best second shot is selected.
