Athletic Association's Policy on Responsibilities
for All St. Ignatius Team Athletes

The purpose of this page is to explain the Athletic Association’s position on the conflicts between St. Ignatius teams, Club teams and other activities not affiliated with school. First and foremost, the St. Ignatius Athletic Association requires every student who participates in team sports for St. Ignatius have a fair and equal chance to compete and play for the sport and/or team for which they desire to play.

When young people play sports, they develop confidence, self-esteem, and learn to trust in their selves, their coach, and their team. It also provides the opportunity to learn immediately from their experiences – win or lose – good or bad. With the growing popularity of "club" sports, it is important the coaches, parents, and student athletes all understand the same basic requirements/expectations for our participating athletes.

The St. Ignatius "team" comes before the "club" team/other activities. All students participating should know this before they sign up or try out to play. At every level, there will be players with varying levels of talent, experience, and determination.

More specifically, the St. Ignatius Athletic Association expects all St. Ignatius team members:

  • Place the priorities of the school team ahead of a "club" team(s)/outside activity(s)
  • All parents and team members should realize it is the sole discretion of the team’s coach to determine if a club sport is interfering in any way with the building of a successful St. Ignatius team. Examples:
    • Missing a St. Ignatius game or practice due to a club event/outside activity
    • Apparent loss of interest in the St. Ignatius team due to club commitments/outside activities
  • If a student wishes to participate for a club team tryout, practice, or game, and it conflicts with a St. Ignatius practice, they may not do so without the prior consent of the team’s head coach. The player must "ask permission", not just tell the coach he/she will be missing from the next practice or game.
  • If a St. Ignatius team player fails to comply with his/her responsibilities to their St. Ignatius team, this player should suffer loss of playing time as deemed appropriate by the head coach.

Note to Players Trying Out for Select Teams:

Any student who tries out and successfully makes a St. Ignatius "select" team should remember they are taking the chance away from other students who are not able to play at the higher level of competition. If a select player does not fulfill his/her responsibilities, he/she is not only letting down the St. Ignatius team, but has also denied those other students the chance to compete at a higher level.
