School of Religion November 2007 DATES TO REMEMBER
I would like to welcome all the students and their families to St. Ignatius P.S.R. program. Our Theme this year is "Put the "I" in Christ" (1Timothy 4:12-13). We have many exciting ideas for the coming year. Thank you for your continued efforts to make sure that your child is on time each week. If the classroom door is shut and no one is in the classroom, please take your child to the cafeteria. Don't forget to call the PSR office at 389-3242, Ext. 2017 to report your child's absence. Where was it? Did you find the Scripture Verse from last month? Well, it was in the second reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to Timothy (1Timothy 2:1-8) at our Opening All School Mass on Sunday, September 23rd. Keep watching to see where I find the Scripture verse for November .the Scripture Verse will be at the end of this newsletter. During the month of October it is devoted to Mary, the mother of Jesus. During this month we honor Mary in prayers and rituals for the very special role she played in the history of our salvation. In class your child will learn about Mary through Scripture and our Catholic Tradition. Please take the time to talk with your child about Mary. Recall Mary's deep faith, her willingness to follow God's will, her commitment to love and care for her Child, and her unfailing fidelity to her Son's mission. Mary knows what our daily lives are like and loves us very much. You might want to make a promise, as a family, to pray the Rosary (each Parish School of Religion student was given a rosary in class) at least once a week during the month of October. We also have certain things that gives our family special significance. Perhaps it's the family name itself. Perhaps it's a crest or seal or banner that is representative of a clan or family from which we are descents. On Thursday, November 1, we celebrate the feast of All Saints. In class, the teachers will talk about some of the saints and how their lives inspire and guide us in our own lives of faith. Consider gathering as a family on this holy day to pick a saint who might be your family patron saint. There are many wonderful men and women whose virtues and faith show us how to live with charity, compassion, and forgiveness as members of a family. Adopt this saint, learn all you can about him or her, and invoke this saint's guidance and wisdom through the years. All Saints' Day is a holy day of obligation that honors all martyrs and saints known and unknown. A saint is a very blessed and holy person who loved God very much. Saints are people who dedicated their lives to God and served other unselfishly. Don't forget to look for the Scripture Verse that I have at the bottom of this Newsletter. On this day dedicated to the saints of the church, we are thankful for their many good works and faithful love for God. How lucky we are to have such good people to learn from and look up to. Today as we honor the saints, please pray for guidance and courage and faith to also follow God in all we do each and every day. Please take a few minutes and talk to your child about his/her patron saint. I know that a couple of grades have the students working on Saint's projects. We have a lot of Saints reference books. Please stop by the PSR Resource Office with your child and Marlene Schirmer can show them to you. If you would like to know when a particular Saints' day is, please ask. We may or may not have a picture of their patron saint, but we will have information. Don't forget to stop by the Parish School of Religion Bulletin Wall (by the entrance of the ramp doors) to see all their projects. All Souls' Day follows All Saint's Day on November 2. It is a day dedicated to all who have died. Christians all over the world remember loved ones, family and friends with thanksgiving and prayer. The following prayer is taken from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter
under heaven: As a reminder, if you move or change your telephone number or email address, please make sure that you notify us as the winter months will be here soon and if we need to cancel class, we need your telephone number. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Mary Ann Bosse Acknowledgment Forms - Have you returned your "Acknowledgement Form" for the Parent/Student Handbook. If not, please take a few minutes to read the handbook with your child and then sign it and send it back with your child. If you need another Handbook, please stop by the PSR Office on Sunday morning. Easels - Don't forget to check the Easels at the doors each week for information going on that day and what is coming in the following weeks. And don't forget the check the PSR wall for projects the students have done. Toy Collection - During the first three Sundays in November (November 4th, 11th and 18th) we will be collecting "new" and "gently" used toys for the children at St. Leo's and McCreary County, Kentucky. Please send the items with your child and he/she may bring it to the PSR office and put it in the box. If you have an item that the student can't carry, you may bring it to the PSR Office. This is a good time to "make room" for new gifts your child may received at Christmas, but also help a less fortunate child at the same time. I always ask my sisters and brothers if they have any toys that the kids no longer play with and are in good condition, because they always have toys on their Christmas lists. Advent Prayer Service - on December 2nd, we will have our Advent Prayer Service in Church at 9:45. Please mark your calendar to attend this Prayer Service with your child. Each family will receive an Advent Wreath to use in your home during Advent. At 9:40 the teachers will take the students over to Church and will sit up front. Please join us for the Advent Prayer Service and then after the prayer service, the students will be dismissed from Church. Parents of students in Preschool through Fourth Grade please come to the front of church to meet your child. Students in Grades Five through Eight will be dismissed from Church. The purple candles/ribbons symbolize waiting, penance and preparation. The rose candle/ribbon symbolizes subdued joy and repentance. Room Parents - This year we are asking for Room Parent Volunteers to assist the teacher by communicating with each student's home about projects, activities, or events throughout the school year, such as All Saint's Celebrations, Advent Wreath making project and Prayer Service, Christmas celebrations, Lenten projects and Prayer Service, special Saint's Day celebrations, May Crowning, etc. Room Parent Volunteers will be contacted about these and other important events. Your duties will include: making reminder phone calls or sending email notices about different events/activities per classroom/grade level; recruit helpers for special projects as requested by the teacher; and assist the teacher during seasonal celebrations as needed. WE ARE STILL IN NEDD OF A COUPLE OF ROOM PARENTS, SO PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP. Confessions - Each student in Grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to go to confession during November. Students in Grades Four and Six will go to Confessions on Sunday, November 4th; students in Grades Three and Five will go on Sunday, November 11th and students in Grades Seven and Eight will go on Sunday, November 18th. Grade 2 students will make their first reconciliation on Saturday, December 1 at 11:00 a.m.. Market Day - Don't forget to place your Market Day orders each month. There will not be any Market Day orders until December 10, so be on the lookout for the order form or go on the Market Day website (www.marketday.com) Any PSR family that ordered a PIE for the PIE SALE will be entered into a drawing for a $25.00 Market Day credit. You will be contacted on Sunday, November 4th. Breakfast or Lunch with Santa Celebration - Please mark your calendar for the Annual "Breakfast or Lunch with Santa" celebration. It will be held in the Community Center on Saturday, November 24, 2007. A form will be mailed to each family with the Insight. If you need a form, please stop by the Parish Office. Please return the form, along with the money to the Parish Office. It is on a first come, first serve basis. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office at 661-6565. Bingo Workers Still Needed - Can you spare one Sunday evening every nine weeks for two to three hours to help at St. Ignatius Bingo? Then St. Ignatius Bingo is looking for you! The bingo helps keep the PSR fees down, so any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. We need your help. This is also a great way to meet other parents in Parish School of Religion and the parish community. Please contact the Parish Office at 661-6565 if you are interested in helping with Bingo. Kids Calendar - Each month you will find attached to the Parish School of Religion Newsletter a Kid's Calendar, which can be displayed in your home with different activities, information, etc. It has something for each day of the month. Maybe it is a question, with the answer found somewhere on the calendar, or a craft to do, or send a note or card to someone, or pray. I have one hanging on my refrigerator and it reminds me to do things. Children's Liturgy of the Word - Each Sunday beginning October 14 through May 18th, takes place for children 4 years through Grade 1. Children's Liturgy of the Word is a program that takes place during the Sunday 10:15 a.m. Mass. They will go with a Catechist during the Liturgy of the Word and return to Mass immediately following the Homily/Creed/Prayer of the Faithful. A form is attached to this newsletter which contains more information. Angel Food Ministry - Attached to this Newsletter is an Angel Food Ministry Order Form. Anyone can order the items, if you are interested, you may order through St. Ignatius Parish Office. CLASSROOM NEWS. . . . . KINDERGARTEN - We are learning about God throughout our daily lives and showing that God loves each of them. GRADE ONE - We will be learning more about the ways that Jesus shows God's love, the story of the Good Samaritan, how the Holy Spirit helps us in Faith, tying the Holy Spirit into the Holy Trinity, and how Jesus gave us the Church. Please ask your child to share what they learn each week, and look at the "With My Family" section at the end of each chapter in the Faith First books. You'll find some great activities for the family that will bring God and love into your relationship. GRADE TWO - The second grade students attended a First Reconciliation meeting with their parents on Wednesday, October 17th. First Reconciliation will be on Saturday, December 1st at 11:00 a.m GRADE THREE - In November we deal with Jesus' early ministry-calling Apostles to follow him, preaching the Good News of God's love to people, and performing miracles. We are hearing about Jesus through bible stories contained in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We are preparing for Thanksgiving by thanking God for His love and the many blessings He has given us. GRADE FOUR - The students are learning about their Patron Saint. Each student is researching information on their saint and we will compile them into a booklet for each student. GRADE FIVE - We are working on the Ten Commandments in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. GRADE SIX - We will be learning about Saints and reflecting on Saints' names for Confirmation. GRADE SEVEN/EIGHT - The Seventh/Eighth grade students attended the Confirmation Commissioning on Wednesday, October 10th. If anyone missed the meeting, please make sure that you get the information. The students will continue to prepare for their confirmation on March 14th. They have put together their binders, discussed archeology finds that support the accuracy of the Bible; discussed death and how it should affect the decisions we make and worked on our Spiritual inventory for confirmation. Please continue to pray for the students during this year. Scripture Verse: "See what love the
Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God". |
